The linear scale as the core of position measurement
The linear scale provides the physical reference for every length measuring system. In magnetoresistive systems, it consists of magnetised north and south poles with a constant pitch, integrated directly into the profile rail. This integration protects it against external influences and ensures precise geometric alignment between the guide point and the measuring point.
A critical advantage of integrated length measuring systems is that positioning the linear scale directly along the travel axis minimises Abbe errors. These occur when the measuring point and the point of action, such as the tool, do not lie on the same line. Angular deviations then lead to position errors proportional to the offset. SCHNEEBERGER reduces this Abbe offset to just a few millimetres.
Magnetoresistive sensors operate reliably even in the presence of contamination, coolant lubricants and mechanical influences. Unlike optical systems, which can be affected by particles, they provide high availability in machine tools and automation systems. The resolution is typically between 1 and 5 micrometres.
